Nagavali D/O Letchumanan, Senior Nurse Manager, SKCH penned a commentary about the memorial services conducted for our late palliative patients. She shared that the SKCH palliative care team looks after patients holistically, including providing bereavement care for their loved ones, who are experiencing a painful loss. At SKCH, memorial services are often organised and attended by colleagues from the ward and family of the late patients. The session celebrates the late patient's life, honours shared memories and provides closure and emotional support.

Nagavali gave an example of a memorial that was conducted for a late patient Mrs Tan, who formed a special bond with many in the ward, including herself. The service was simple yet heartfelt. Staff performed songs, musical instrument performances and recited poems. Staff who had cared for Mrs Tan shared fond memories through a photo montage of precious photos taken of them engaged in activities. Mrs Tan's family was very moved and gave heartening feedback. Nagavali reflected about the profound impact nurses can have on people's lives and the importance of compassion in healthcare.
