The Ministry of Manpower and the Ministry of Health, in collaboration with Nanyang Polytechnic and participating hospitals have launched a Strategic Manpower Conversion Programme (SMCP) for healthcare sector to help non-heatlchcare trained professionals acquire skills as Registered Nurses.

The SMCP (Healthcare) –Nursing is a scheme targeted at augmenting Singapore’s pool of nursing professions by enabling polytechnic & university graduates without prior healthcare career experience to undergo Nanyang Polytechnic’s 2 year full-time Diploma in Nursing course. The accelerated programme will provide trainees with a quality education and experiential foundation that gives them a head-start in a fulling nursing career.

We are inviting interested parties to apply to us for sponsorship. A bond period of three years will apply. Upon completion of the programme, you will being an exciting career in one of the following institutions in SingHealth:

1. Changi General Hospital
2. KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital
3. Singapore General Hospital
4. National Heart Centre

Please indicate in your application form 3 of the above institutions in order of preference. The closing date for the submission of application form is 12 Mar 2004. The scholarship offers good GCE “O” & “A” level students the chance to pursue Health Sciences Degree in Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Diagnostic Radiography, Radiation Therapy and Nursing – tenable in Nanyang Polytechnic, followed by La Trobe University (for Nursing course) or University of Sydney (for other Health Sciences courses).

As a Health Science professional, you’ll be a key member of our healthcare team, helping to improve the lives of patients in our hospitals, clinics, and step-down care facilities. Tenure of Award
First 3 years in Nanyang Polytechnic
For Nursing course, the final year is tenable in La Trobe University.
For other Health Sciences courses, the final year is tenable in University of Sydney.

Value of Award
For the 3 years in Nanyang Polytechnic:
- Monthly allowance
- Tuition fees

For the final year in La Trobe University /University of Sydney:
- Maintenance allowance
- Tuition fees
- Return economy class airfare
- Warm clothing allowance
- Special allowance for clinical placement if applicable

ELIGIBILITY

Citizenship requirements
Singapore Citizen or Singapore Permanent Resident

Academic requirements
GCE 'A' level science students with good GCE 'O' and 'A' level results. For applications in Diagnostic Radiography and Radiation Therapy, the subject of Physics is preferred in GCE 'A' level results.

Other requirements

Possess good co-curricular activities (CCA) record.
Successful applicants for the scholarship will be required to meet the minimum admission criteria of Nanyang Polytechnic and La Trobe University/University of Sydney and maintain a minimum grade average throughout the course.

Condition of Award
4 years' bond to be served at a restructured hospital/institution

APPLICATION
Suitable candidates will be granted sponsorship subject to admission to the Diploma course at Nanyang Polytechnic and meeting entry requirement of La Trobe University/University of Sydney.

Students who are currently undertaking the Health Sciences courses at Nanyang Polytechnic may also apply.
