Two women have become the first recipients of kidneys from dead people aged over 60, since the age limit for such organ donations was lifted last November. They scored another first - each received two kidneys. Their operations at the Singapore General Hospital (SGH) were on Dec 21 and Feb 12, after the donors died from strokes.

Studies show that transplant patients have the same survival rates for up to five years, regardless of the age of the living kidney donor. Currently, there is no age cap for live donors. Deceased donors have to be 60 or below, but from next month, this cap will be lifted following recent changes to the Human Organ Transplant Act.

Dr Terence Kee, consultant transplant physician at the Singapore General Hospital's Kidney Transplant Programme, said that scientific evidence suggests that they are not at higher risk of surgical complications compared with younger donors.

Heart transplant recipient Lim Gek Chan is so thankful to be alive he is paying it forward - by donating his own heart valves. Mr Lim, 50, who is unemployed, had a heart transplant in February. He said in Mandarin: 'I'm grateful for my new heart. Without the donor's prior consent, I would not be alive.'

MR VINDAN Sahadevan, 46, knows he's one lucky man. The father of two has survived four heart attacks in the last decade. The latest one in April this year destroyed so much of his heart muscle that doctors had to implant a palm-size plastic pump to take over for his ticker. Another man, Mr Loa Nguang Peng also had a palm-size pump implanted in his chest while waiting for a transplant.

Jason Ho was likely to die in a year or two – unless he received a new heart. That new lease of life came on Dec 28 – Jason was among six heart transplant recipients.

Yet the 58-year-old,married to Madam Lim Foong Ngee and father of Tabitha, Given and Paul, went ahead. Given is just six and he wanted to see him grow up, Mr Lau said of why he agreed to a 12hr 20min operation that made medical history. It is Asia's first heart-liver transplant, say doctors from the Singapore General Hospital and the National Heart Centre Singapore.

| All eyes on S’pore for corneal transplants - The Straits Times |
Singapore will take the lead in the setting up of an Asian-wide body, which will look into corneal transplants and promoting high-quality banking practices. The Republic’s role in the forming of the Association of Eye Banks of Asia (AEBA) will see it coordinating with members to increase corneal donation and establish shared corneal tissue programmes among Asian countries.

Ten months after its doors opened, a tissue bank that stores parts of the human heart destined for transplant is seeking more donors. Officials from the National Cardiovascular Homograft Bank said yesterday that it has received eight tissue grafts, such as heart valves and the main artery of the heart, since February. They hope to build up a bank of at least 20 heart valves.

Skin saved the life of local technician Low Chee Hwa, after a workplace fire in July last year left him with burns to 50 per cent of his body, badly damaging his arms, legs and torso. The 30-year-old was in a perilous situation as his body did not have enough healthy skin to graft onto his burns.

When three-month-old Ryan Wong died from complications following surgery for a cleft lip at the end of January, his parents, in a rare gesture, donated his skin. That decision made him the youngest organ donor here. His parents, Mr Norman Wong, 46, and his wife Juliet, 37, also wanted to donate the rest of their son’s organs, but were told they were either too small or not yet fully developed. But his skin was usable, so a small piece was taken off his back for the skin bank here.

MADAM Ang Kim Choo is deeply grateful to the amended Human Organ Transplant Act (HOTA). Without it, she doubts if she would be alive today. Madam Ang, 57, told the New Paper in an interview. “I had a heart condition for 10 years. I had a weak heart and I was on medication. But towards the ninth and 10th years of my illness, I felt worse.” By then, no amount of medication could help her.
