Systems Design (SD)

In Peter Senge’s book, The Fifth Discipline: The Art and Practice of the Learning Organization, ‘systems thinking’ is introduced as a conceptual framework based on system dynamics: It disciplines us in seeing and understanding patterns – looking beyond events, to deeper “structures” that control events, and discovering the leverage that lies hidden in these structures.

The essence of the discipline lies in a shift of mind to

  • see interrelationships rather than linear cause effect chains and
  • see processes of change rather than snapshots

In our setting, Systems Design involves a holistic multi-faceted approach to examining the delivery of care including evaluation of structure, process, incentives and controls. Systems Design builds on the earlier two programme tracks (Outcomes Research and Health Technology Assessment) and utilizes the findings to propose improvements. Systems Design includes both operational challenges such as decreasing hospital infection rates and strategic issues such as remuneration philosophy for public sector clinicians and macro-economic healthcare financing considerations.
