Health technology covers any method used to promote health, prevent and treat disease and improve rehabilitation or long-term care. ‘Technologies’ in this context are not confined to new drugs or pieces of sophisticated equipment, but include procedures, settings of care and screening programs.
Health technology assessment (HTA) hence seeks to address the medical, social, ethical and economic implications of the development and use of health technology through a systematic evaluation. |

In Jan 2007, the centre provided information to help SingHealth make decisions and rank the proposals for the Health Service Development Programme (HSDP). Relevance was measured by the number of patients that could potentially benefit from the funding of the new technology as well as alignment with cluster strategic objectives. Considerations were also made for potential synergies with existing technologies in the institutions. Financing of the technology was carefully looked into to ensure viability after funding ceases. The centre will support the work of the newly established SingHealth Technology Assessment Committee in optimizing population and organizational benefit from the strategic procurement of new technologies.
