Colorectal Surgery
Colorectal Surgery is a field of medicine in which a variety of surgical procedures are performed to repair damage to the colon, rectum and anus caused by injury or diseases of the lower body region such as cancer, hernias etc.
Within the SingHealth group, the Singapore General Hospital (SGH) is home to the only specialised department in Singapore for
colon and rectal surgery, providing comprehensive investigative and emergency services for the whole range of colorectal and peri-anal conditions and diseases.
SGH’s Department of Colorectal Surgery is also an internationally renowned centre for
laparoscopic colorectal surgery. These procedures are performed in an operating theatre specially designed for
minimally invasive or laparoscopic surgery, with state-of-the-art digital camera systems, staplers and instruments.

Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) Procedures in Colorectal Surgery
Laparoscopic surgery is suitable for most colorectal operations. However, it may not be suitable in certain cases, such as when the patient has severe cardiorespiratory disease, if the tumour is too large, or if the patient has had multiple abdominal operations previously.
Some advantages of the laparoscopic surgery include less post-operative pain, faster recovery and lower wound infection rates. There are also fewer complications. |

Treatment for Colorectal Cancer
Colorectal Cancer is a cancer that develops from the cells of the large intestine and is the second most common cancer in Singapore.
The mainstay of treatment is surgery. The cancer, its surrounding fat and lymph glands are removed in one piece. The two ends of the cut section are joined together. During surgery, the surgeon will normally inspect the liver and other surrounding organs for signs of cancer as well. |
