Virtual Reality Neurosurgery
|
Neurosurgery is possibly one of the most intricate and demanding surgical specialty. In the course of surgery, the neurosurgeon has to navigate and operate around critical structures essential to life which requires thorough knowledge of anatomical structures.
Traditional imaging and scans present anatomical structures in 2-Dimensional (2-D) fashion, hence the need for a Virtual Reality platform to provide 3-D appreciation of structures.
In medicine and especially neurosurgery virtual-reality methods are used for education, surgical planning and simulation on a virtual patient. |
|
How Virtual Reality Neurosurgery is performed
The Neurosurgery department at the National Neuroscience Institute (NNI) has used the Dextroscope Virtual Reality Surgery System, developed in conjunction with Volume Interactions, as part of the overall management of patients since 1998.
All relevant imaging such as magnetic resonance imaging, Computed tomography scans, venography and angiography are loaded into the Dextroscope System to form a computer generated 3-D interface. |
Benefits of Virtual Reality Neurosurgery - Individualised Surgical Plan
The virtual workspace provides an interactive virtual 3-D platform for the neurosurgeon for surgical planning. Tools for image fusion, colour and transparency coding, manual and automatic segmentation of structures such as brain tumour, curved, linear and volumetric measurements as well as simulated tissue removal are available. The use of these sophisticated tools based on the patient’s actual scans and images provide important information on the individual spatial relationships of surgically relevant structures, which can be explored and different approaches simulated to help in the decision for the best surgical plan. The end result is a customised individualised surgical plan for the patient.
Virtual Reality Surgery is therefore an important component of the range of technology currently available to improve patient care, surgical outcome and safety in neurosurgery. |
Who it is for
For patients with brain tumours, vascular malformations, skull base tumours and other complex neurosurgical pathology. |

The NNI Advantage
International Training and Experience
|
| The Department of Neurosurgery trained many of the practising neurosurgeons in Singapore, and it remains today the largest in Singapore in terms of number of neurosurgeons, patient load and number of surgical procedures performed. |
|
Depth of Experience and Methodology
|
All operating theatres in the hospitals of NNI Campuses are equipped with special tools such as high-speed drills to remove bone for better lesion exposure, and ultrasonic aspirators that allows the neurosurgeon to remove tumours that are difficult to cut.
Taking advantage of the cutting edge technology and facility, our team of neurosurgeons has developed neurosurgical subspecialties and programmes for the various diseases encountered in the local population, enhancing the quality of care for our patients. |
