Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy for Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in women. Surgical treatment is instrumental in achieving control of the cancer with high cure rates. Assessment of the axillary lymph nodes is an important step in the surgical treatment of breast cancer. A significant advancement in the evaluation of lymph node status in breast cancer is the sentinel lymph node biopsy technique.

What is Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy

Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy for Breast CancerStaging of the lymph nodes of the axilla is an important part of surgical treatment of breast cancer. Staging is essential to allow tailored treatment for each patient.

Sentinel lymph node biopsy involves the use of modern advanced technology to identify the first lymph node in the axilla to contain cancer if the cancer were to have spread to the axilla. Most people have 1-3 sentinel lymph nodes. If the sentinel lymph node is negative for cancer, then there is no need to routinely remove all the axilla lymph nodes. If the sentinel lymph node contains cancer, then all the lymph nodes will need to be removed as there is a significant chance of further lymph nodes in the axilla containing cancer.

A patient who undergoes sentinel lymph node biopsy will not suffer the complications of arm pain, stiffness, numbness or swelling that may occur in women who have all the axilla lymph nodes removed.

Who it is for

Sentinel lymph node biopsy is suitable for patients with early breast cancer, with no clinical evidence of cancer involving the axilla lymph nodes. In our experience, most women with early breast cancers will be suitable for this technique.
