Treatment for Pituitary Tumours
|
The pituitary gland is found at the base of the brain. It is the "master" gland and controls other glands such as the thyroid and adrenal glands as well as most bodily functions.
Although most pituitary tumours are benign, if not diagnosed early, it can grow to a size that will cause loss of vision, impact the brain and pituitary. Removal of the tumour is necessary when it is putting pressure on the brain or pressing on the optic nerves.
Pituitary tumours can be treated through various means. Surgical removal of the tumour is the treatment of choice. For patients who failed surgery, radio-surgery with the Gamma Knife is an option. This involves the use of CT/MRI scans which are computerised to enable the surgeon to direct many small radiation beams from different angles to converge on the tumour to shrink and kill it. Radio-surgery can also be used as an adjunct to surgery where complete removal of the tumour is impossible. Medications can also be used to treat the tumour. |

What is Endoscopic Pituitary Surgery
Endoscopic pituitary surgery is commonly used for the excision of pituitary tumours and involves entry into the brain via the nose. This minimally invasive method is known as the transsphenoidal approach.
As the incision is sometimes made in the gums of the upper teeth, under the upper lip or at the back of the nose, there are no external scars. With this minimally invasive approach, post-operative pain is reduced and hospital and overall recovery time shortened.
The procedure utilising endoscopic technology also enables ENT surgeons to clearly visualise the pituitary gland and other anatomical structures allowing for more accurate lesion resection. |
Who it is for
It is estimated that one out of every five people in the world has a pituitary tumour. Patients often present with visual, hormonal symptoms or non-specific headaches. |

Why choose us
International Training & Experience
|
| SGH is the world pioneer in this procedure and has popularised this technique which is now used at major institutions worldwide. It also continues to conduct regular international workshops to share its expertise. |
|
Depth of Experience
|
| Since SGH pioneered this procedure 12 years ago, we have performed over 400 procedures. We continue to perform 30 to 40 cases a year. |
|
Established Methodology
|
| We have developed a unique pituitary surgery pathway, a patient-focused tool which provides for explicit and well-defined care. This multidisciplinary plan provides patients with the best care possible leading to better outcome. |
|
Multidisciplinary Care
|
| Using a multidisciplinary care approach, our ENT and neuro- surgeons work closely with endocrinologists, ophthalmologists and radiation oncologists to ensure that our patients receive the best plan of treatment possible. |
