Treatment for Knee Pain
|
The most common cause of knee pain is due to Osteoarthritis, more commonly known as ‘wear and tear’ arthritis. In such cases, the cartilage, the cushioning layer of tissue between the bones of the knee joint becomes thinner. Without enough cartilage, the bones rub together causing friction, pain and eventually deterioration of the bone surfaces. Knee pain which can also be caused by rheumatoid arthritis and other degenerative conditions is not limited to the elderly.

Knee replacement surgery
In knee arthroplasty, the bones rubbing together are resurfaced with metal and plastic implants that are almost identical to the parts being replaced. The operation, which could involve part of the knee or the total knee, produces the most satisfactory long term results for the patient.
With minimally invasive knee arthroplasty, patients will only have an incision which is almost half the length of that from conventional surgery. There will also be less pain and disruption of tissue, leading to faster healing time and less time spent in hospital – an average of just one day’s overnight stay in the case of partial knee replacement. Most patients recover well enough to perform rehabilitation exercises very soon after. With computer-assisted surgery (CAS), orthopaedic surgeons at SGH are able to perform knee arthroplasty with high accuracy and with as little trauma to the patient as possible.
With CAS technology surgeons are able to perform the surgery with smaller incisions and greater precision. The patient’s bones and joint implants are aligned with a degree of accuracy not possible with a naked eye, allowing for better long-term results.
For some, joint re-surfacing can be an interim solution before joint replacement as it would allow for the joint to remain as close to the native joint as possible. |
Who it is for
Osteoarthritis tends to affect mainly people aged 55 and above. Knee replacement surgery or knee arthroplasty can be considered when the pain is so bad that it interferes with your normal activities, or non-surgical treatments such as medication are not working. The orthopaedic surgeon will make a thorough examination of your knee, including X-ray, before deciding whether you need such an operation. |

The SGH Advantage
Pioneer in the Region
|
| SGH was the first hospital in the region to have employed computer-assisted technology, in 2001. It is one of the few centres in the region to be offering computer-assisted knee replacement surgery. |
|
Dept of Experience
|
| SGH performs one of the highest numbers of minimally invasive knee replacement surgeries and annually performs 1200 knee replacements. |
|
Regional Referral and Training Centre
|
| SGH’s Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is recognised as a tertiary centre and also offers specialised training for doctors in the region. . |
