Haematopoietic Blood Stem Cell Transplant

Haematopoietic Blood Stem Cell TransplantBone marrow is a spongy tissue found inside the large bones. Haematopoietic stem cells in the bone marrow are responsible for making blood cells including red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. These stem cells are used for transplantation and can be collected from the bone marrow, peripheral blood or umbilical cord blood.

What is Haematopoietic stem cell transplant

Haematopoietic stem cell transplant is a curative procedure for malignant and non-malignant diseases in children. In normal cancer therapy, the amount of chemotherapy given is limited because it destroys bone marrow function. Haematopoietic stem cell transplantation makes it possible to use higher doses of chemotherapy by replacing the destroyed bone marrow.

The new cells from the donor, which will multiply in the body will also serve to kill the cancer cells.

Stem cells can also be transplanted to replace missing enzymes or proteins in certain genetic or immunodeficiency diseases.

The transplant itself involves a transfusion of bone marrow or blood stem cells from a patient or a donor after conditioning with medication. After two to four weeks, the stem cells engraft and begin to produce mature blood cells. The first sign of this is the production of white blood cells. Once engraftment is achieved and the patient is stable, he or she can be discharged from hospital.

Who it is for

Malignant Diseases
  • Blood cancers like leukaemia and lymphoma
  • Solid tumours like advanced stage neuroblastoma, sarcoma
Non-Malignant Diseases
  • Blood disorders like aplastic anaemia
  • Immune disorders like congenital immunodeficiency diseases
  • Generic diseases like thalassaemia, inborn errors of metabolism

Our treatment centres

Department of Haematology, Singapore General Hospital (SGH)
The Children's Cancer Centre, KK Women's and Children's Hospital (KKH)

The SGH Advantage

Depth of Experience

With over 20 years experience, the department has performed over 800 cases of haematopoietic stem cell transplants, of which, about 150 are for acute leukemias.

Recognised International Tertiary Centre

As a tertiary referral centre, the SGH Haematology Department receives regional and international patients requiring treatment for blood and blood-related disorders.

Positive Outcomes

Our results for bone marrow transplant for common blood diseases such as leukemia are comparable to published data from major transplant centres.

Innovative Research

SGH is renowned for innovative treatment, including the world’s first peripheral blood stem cell transplant from a matched unrelated donor to a Thalassaemia Major patient and the world’s first case of cord blood transplant for a patient with Thalassaemia Major. We have also successfully carried out studies on anti-cancer cell therapy and embarked upon novel treatment protocols including the expansion of hematopoietic stem cells from cord blood.

Multidisplinary Team

State-of-the-art equipment at SGH is complemented by an experienced team of specialists working closely with nurses, oncology pharmacists and a team of transplant co-ordinators to provide multidisciplinary care to all patients.

The KKH Advantage

Proven Expertise

The paediatric haematopoietic stem cell transplant programme in KKH was started in 1998. To date, we have successfully transplanted many malignant and non-malignant cases with a survival rate of 70-80%, comparable to other advanced centres in the world.

State of the art facilities

There are four dedicated positive pressure, hepa filter isolation rooms used for stem cell transplants in the Children’s Cancer Centre. A pheresis machine is also available to harvest peripheral blood stem cells for transplant. The Singapore public cord blood bank is sited in KKH.

Multidisciplinary Team

Our paediatric oncologists work closely with trained nurses, oncology pharmacists, dietitians, social workers and a transplant coordinator who helps to liaise with local and international registries for marrow and cord blood units for patients who need a transplant.
