Treatment for Cleft Lip / Palate

Bilateral Pre-op Bilateral Post-op Unilateral Pre-op Unilateral Post-op

Different forms of Clefts

A child may be born with a cleft lip, a complete or incomplete cleft palate or both. There are different forms of clefts.
  • Cleft Lip
  • Cleft Lip and Palate
  • Submucous Cleft Palate – there is a separation of the palate muscles that is covered with skin.
  • Mircoform Cleft Lip – there is skin covering the separation of the lip muscles. Usually a Mircoform Cleft Lip is obvious when a child smiles or a notch is present.

Repair of Cleft Lips and Palates

It requires long-term management depending on the severity and type of the deformity. The management can be categorised as such:
  • Pre-surgical orthodontic preparation at birth – Nasoalveolor Moulding (NAM)
  • Lip surgery performed at 3- 6 months old
  • Palatal closure performed at 6-12 months old
  • Speech surgery for velopharyngeal insufficiency performed at 5 years old
  • Alveolar bone grafting performed at 8-11 years old
  • Maxillary advancement performed at 15-16 years old
  • Secondary soft tissue surgery and/or rhinoplasty performed at 18 years old
