Breast Cancer Surgery
|
Breast cancer is cancer that originates from the breast tissue. It can affect women of all ages but most commonly affects those above 40. It is potentially fatal but achieving a complete cure is also possible. There are 5 stages of breast cancer (stage 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4). Treatment at stage 0 & 1 can result in cure rates of above 90%.
|
|
Surgery on the Breast
Surgery is usually the 1st step in the treatment of breast cancer as it is the quickest and most complete way of removing the cancerous tissue. There are 2 surgical options: complete removal of the breast (mastectomy) or partial removal (breast conservation). In early stages of breast cancer (stage 0, 1, & 2) breast conservation is often possible. |
Surgery on the Axilla
Some glands (lymph nodes) in the armpit area (axilla) may need to be surgically removed in order to accurately stage the cancer. This is usually performed during the breast surgery. This part of the operation is called axillary dissection. The number of lymph nodes that are removed depends on the type of cancerous cells. |
Breast Reconstruction
In certain situations, a mastectomy would be able to achieve a higher cure rate. When that happens, we offer the option of reconstructing the breast form. This can be done at the same time as the mastectomy (immediate) or at the later stage (delayed). Women who previously have had a mastectomy without reconstruction may opt for delayed reconstruction.
Breast reconstruction involves either inserting an implant or transferring the woman’s own tissue from another part of the body to the chest area to recreate the breast form.
The choice of surgery to the breast, the axilla and the option of reconstruction require a full assessment by the breast surgeon and discussion with the patient. |
