Nose Bleeds
Nose bleeds are a common in children.
They are usually not serious conditions & result from irritation to the normally fragile surface of the nasal lining.
When there are nose bleeds:
- Sit the child up and lean forward to prevent swallowing of blood
- Pinch the tip of the nose
- Do NOT insert tissues, gauze into the nose
- If the bleeding persists for more than 15 minutes, see a doctor
For the next few days:
- Avoid further irritation to the nose
- Instruct the child to blow his nose gently
See doctor when:
- Nose bleeds become more frequent and difficult to stop
- There is blood elsewhere, e.g. in stools, urine and tears
- The child seems to bruise easily or bleeds from wounds are difficult to stop
- There are rashes/bruises on the skin and the child appears pale, tired, ill
