Lung Transplantation

Description

Contributed by Dept of Cardiothoracic Surgery (website)

Description

Lung transplantation is the replacement of one or both diseased lungs with healthy lungs from a human donor. It is usually used as the last resort treatment for lung failure.

Sometimes heart and lung transplantation are performed at the same time (heart-lung transplant) if the patient's heart is also diseased.

Patients will require immuno-suppressive medications for the rest of their lives to prevent immune rejection of the transplanted lung.
