Heart Transplantation

Description

Contributed by Dept of Cardiothoracic Surgery (website)

Description

Heart transplantation is the replacement of a damaged or diseased heart with a healthy one from a donor who has suffered brain death but remains on life-support.

The heart of the donor is completely removed and quickly sent to the hospital where the recipient is waiting.

A heart may be irreversibly damaged by long-lasting heart disease or viral infection.

Patients who cannot be treated by any other medical or surgical means may be considered as candidates for heart transplant. This is recognised to be the proven procedure for appropriately selected patients.

Immuno-suppressive drugs must be taken indefinitely to prevent the body from rejecting the new heart.
