EYELID INFECTION (BLEPHARITIS)

Are your eyes itchy, red, dry and sore? Do small stys occur on your eyelids? You may have an eyelid infection.

What is an Eyelid Infection (Blepharitis)?

Eyelid infections (blepharitis) are a chronic inflammatory condition of the eyelid. It is not contagious.

What causes Eyelid Infections (Blepharitis)?

Eyelid infections (blepharitis) are often caused by a bacteria infection.

How do I know if I have an Eyelid Infection (Blepharitis)?

You may have recurrent red eyes, dry eyes or chronic eye irritation. You may also get styes or small cysts on your eyelid. 

What puts me at risk of Eyelid Infections (Blepharitis)?

Eyelid infections (blepharitis) are a common condition especially among Asians. Risk factors include dandruff, dry skin, acne, diabetes or poor hygiene. 

What can I do to prevent Eyelid Infections (Blepharitis)?

You can reduce your risk of contracting eyelid infections (blepharitis) by maintaining good eye health and good hygiene. Although it is a common condition, you should see your eye doctor as eyelid infections may result in complications such as corneal infections, misdirected lashes, inward turning (entropion) or outward turning eyelids (ectropion).

What kinds of treatments are available for Eyelid Infections (Blepharitis)?

Your eye doctor may prescribe you with a lid scrub or topical antibiotic ointment. If there are cornea complications, mild topical steroids may be used on a short term basis. Ocular lubricants may also be prescribed for dry eyes.
