A unique one-stop medical facility, The SGH LIFE (Lifestyle Improvement Fitness Enhancement) Centre, is the first in Asia to house a multi-disciplinary team of Medical Doctors, Dietitians, Physiotherapists, Psychologists, Occupational Therapists and Medical Social Workers specialising in healthy lifestyle practices, interventions and behavioural modifications within one Centre.
The LIFE Centre is a hospital-based facility providing integrated and holistic care, for patients with lifestyle-related medical conditions, in particular patients with eating disorders and obesity and related comorbidities that are amenable to treatment.
By providing quality, evidence-based treatment that empowers patients to take charge of their health and maintain a healthy lifestyle, the LIFE Centre aims to guide patients towards a healthy balance in their physical and mental health so that they can optimise their health status regardless of age, gender or medical condition. This is achieved through medical treatment, nutrition and exercise therapy, stress management, relaxation therapy and psychotherapy. Health professionals, using evidence-based techniques and interventions, will guide patients in making and maintaining the lifestyle changes gradually. All the facilities in the Centre are customised to provide an optimal environment for all patients to the appropriate lifestyle changes.
The LIFE Centre also provides structured treatment programmes for obesity and eating disorders utilising a multi-disciplinary approach. Patients undergo appropriate medical treatment and therapy to achieve a healthy weight and most importantly make the change towards a healthy lifestyle. Private consultations by medical doctors and healthcare professionals are also available.
The Centre has a fully equipped gym staffed by Sports Trainers and Physiotherapists specialising in exercise therapy and obesity management. All the exercise programmes are individually tailored and prescribed based on fitness assessments conducted prior to the start of the exercise programme. For the convenience of working adults who would like to participate in a supervised exercise programme, the gym is also open in the evening. 
The Centre also has a fully functional kitchen with a registered Dietitian and chef imparting tips on the basics of healthy cooking and recipe modification. Registered Dietitians also lead regular supermarket tours to teach patients the basics of reading nutrition labels and shopping wisely and healthily for groceries. Group behavioural therapy and stress management workshops are also conducted for patients. Regular public education nutrition lectures and “Gym 101 – introduction to working out in the gym” workshops are also conducted to empower the public on the basics of healthy lifestyle.
Type of patients who might be appropriate for referral: 1. For obesity management: BMI between 25.0 – 27.5kg/m2 with a comorbidity (Type II Diabetes Mellitus, Dyslipidemia, Hyperlipidemia, Hypertension, etc) OR BMI > 27.5kg/m2) 2. For eating disorder treatment programme: history of eating disorder such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia, binge-eating, etc 3. Sedentary individuals with normal BMI with or without comorbidities who will benefit from a structured exercise programme 4. Patients with osteoporosis who will benefit from nutritional interventions and exercise programme to retard bone loss 5. Elderly patients who will benefit from nutritional interventions and exercise programme to maintain and improve health
