SingHealth Aids Tidal Waves Victims

The SingHealth cluster of public healthcare institutions will carry out a fund-raising drive among its 12,000 staff in aid of the victims of the Tsunami tidal waves tragedy that recently hit several Asian countries. Staff of SingHealth’s three hospitals, five specialist centres and eight polyclinics will make monetary donations through their respective institutions over the next few weeks. These contributions will be used to fund purchases and direct delivery of emergency items like medicine and first aid, food parcels and other relief supplies for the displaced and homeless.

In addition, 7 volunteer clinical personnel from SingHealth institutions Changi General Hospital (CGH), Singapore General Hospital (SGH) and the National Cancer Centre (NCC) will join the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) humanitarian mission headed for Aceh, Indonesia. Other personnel may be deployed when the need arises. SingHealth is also arranging for contributions of medical supplies to be sent to areas in need.

To date, CGH has treated three tidal waves victims who sustained injuries in Thailand. They have all been discharged from hospital.

SingHealth’s Group Chief Executive Officer Professor Tan Ser Kiat said, "It is indeed a grim end to 2004 and we empathise and share in the pain and sufferings of those who have lost or are still looking for loved ones. The needs on the ground are many; medical aid and supplies are required, and funds are needed to help the displaced and homeless. Our cluster is committed to helping in whatever way we can."
