Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy is a non-surgical procedures that uses shockwaves to disintegrate the stones. It is best suited for smaller stones (usually less than 2cm in diameter). The procedure requires no incisions, it only takes about an hour and does not require hospitalisation.
Ureteroscopic Lithotripsy (URS) URS can be used for treatment of stones in the ureter. The procedure is minimally invasive and is performed as day surgery. It has a high success rate, does not leave any scar. It is less painful and has a shorter recovery time as compared to conventional open surgery.
Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL) PCNL is often carried out for large stones (more than 2cm in diameter) and situations where ESWL is ineffective. A minimally invasive procedure, PCNL is less painful as compared to conventional open surgery and leaves no obvious scar. Patients enjoy faster recovery time, resulting in a short hospitalisation stay, and can resume normal activity in less than two weeks.
A person can have stones and yet not experience any symptoms. However, should stones cause pain or difficulty in urinating (as in the case of ureteral stones), they need to be dissolved or surgically removed.
