What is blood pressure?
Blood pressure is the force of the blood pressure pushing against the wall of the blood vessels. The systolic pressure (the higher value) is measured when the heart is contracting. The diastolic pressure (the lower value) is the pressure when the heart is at rest, between beats.

What is high blood pressure?
High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, occurs when a person's systolic blood pressure is equal to or greater than 140mmHg, or when the diastolic pressure is equal to or greater than 90mmHg.

What are the risks of high blood pressure?
High Blood pressure/hypertension increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. This includes stroke, heart disease or kidney disease.

How can I lower blood pressure (BP)?
• Know your BP and monitor it regularly.
• Lose weight if you are overweight.
• Eat a healthy diet low in saturated fat, cholesterol and salt.
• Take your medication as prescribed.
• Follow your doctor's advice and take up a physical activity you enjoy.
• Keep appointments with your doctor.
• Quit smoking.
• Control alcohol intake.
