What is a capsule endoscope?
Put simply, it is a wireless camera in a pill. It is used to perform a non-invasive and painless endoscopic imaging of the small intestine.

When is capsule endoscopy helpful?
In recurrent or persistent abdominal pain, diarrhoea, bleeding etc for which the cause cannot be found after a conventional gastrointestinal scope, it helps the doctor determine the cause of those symptoms.

How does capsule endoscopy help?
It lets the doctor carry out a thorough examination of the entire small intestine - this has a significant high detection capability.

What preparation is required?
The patient needs to fast for 12 hours before to allow for optimal viewing. Sensor pads are then attached to the patient's abdomen and a data recorder is straped like a belt around the waist.

What is the procedure like?
The procedure begins when the patient swallows the capsule with water. No sedation is required. The capsule travels naturally through the body and transmits images to the data recorder for eight hours.

Meanwhile, the patient leaves the clinic and comes back when the procedure is completed to return the data recorder and sensor. The doctor can then proceed to do an analysis.

What happens to the capsule?
The capsule will pass out of the body within 24 hours or longer - depending on frequency of bowel movement - without any pain or discomfort. The capsule is made of a specially sealed bio-compatible material that is resistant to the gastrointestinal tract's digestive fluids - it will not affect the intestine.

WILL THE CAPSULE ENDOSCOPE BE SUITABLE FOR YOU?
There may be some instances when it is not advisable to use a capsule endoscope. Your doctor is the best person to advise you, so discuss the procedure with them first.
