This program aims to expose trainees to a wide variety of specialties and a broader experience leading to MRCP/MMed examinations. All important postings will be covered during the 3-year training period and trainees are assured of their postings right from the beginning. It removes the uncertainty of having to select posting every 6 months. This program also allows trainees to have exposure to a variety of specialties, which will help them greatly in selecting their future career after completing their basic medical training.
The program was implemented in the May 2004. 6 trainees were selected and have started their first posting under this program.
We bring to you a short interview with one of the trainees, Dr Yuen Siu Mun who are currently under this program:
MM: Why did you apply for this program?
YSM: I think the ability to chose 3-month rotations is very attractive. I am basically comfortable with the working environment in SGH so that made my choice easier. I was looking for something that could value-add to my BST and I thought the SGH program was very promising.
MM: What are the advantages of this program so far?
YSM: Well, not having to chose MOPEX is fantastic! Having postings already planned and sorted out is very re-assuring. I am also guaranteed a place in the so-called competitive postings in which many apply but few eventually get a place.
MM: How do you feel about this program? Will you recommend it to your fellow MOs?
YSM: This program should be offered to as many trainees as possible as the benefits of immersion in a wide spectrum of postings cannot be underestimated. For example, a normal BST of 3 years will take one through 6 postings of 6 months duration each. With the SGH program, 1 year is taken up by cardiology and respiratory. The remaining 2 years allow a total of 8 more postings of 3 months each, which is excellent! I will definitely recommend this program to all my fellow Medical Officers.
MM: Do you think this program has help you in developing your career?
YSM: It's still early days yet but I don't see why it will not help in my career development.
