For the first time, SingHealth has formally pooled its resources together to organize a BST Surgery Preparatory Course for its trainees who are taking MRCS Final Assessment. This arises from feedback that the expereince of previous candidates was a relative lack of practice in interview and clinical viva technique in a more formal setting.

Since early May this year, the trainees met weekly on a Saturday morning for two hours with their tutors. The tutorials are delivered in small groups on a topical basis with clinical tutors interviewing the trainees in a format identical to that of the actual examination. Special thanks to tutors who have taken efforts to prepare and to guide these trainees. These tutors include general surgeons, cardiothoracic surgeons, neurosurgeons, orthopaedic surgeons, paediatric surgeons, urologists and anaesthetists from the SingHealth institutions.

Here's sharing from one of the trainees, Dr Mohamed Zulfikar Raseed who have benefited from the course:

"The first SingHealth BST Surgery Preparatory Course has been a tremendous advantage to medical officers in our preparation for the final MRCS exam.

The teaching sessions are usually conducted in a viva voce format based on a particular and relevant topic each week. Students are split into small groups with a relatively high tutor to student ratio, which provides for a right balance of opportunity to speak up and listen to others, picking up tips along the way. The timing and frequency of the course was ideal, complementing both the NUS course and the local MRCS exam.

Finally, the results speak for themselves. The fact that an unprecedented 95 per cent of the cohort was successful in the MRCS examination is testament to the effectiveness of the course and SingHealth's commitment to training in general."
