House Officer (HO) Training is a combination of learning and gaining experience through daily patient contact, ward rounds and service work. Depending on the posting you are undergoing, you will learn from daily ward rounds, ward procedures, teaching and grand ward rounds, mortality rounds, surgical OT, CMEs and bedside discussion. Being involved in medical decision making about your patients within a supervised environment will allow you to hone what medical school has prepared you for.
In conjunction with the annual NUS orientation for new House Officers (local), you will undergo SingHealth Cluster Orientation Program in late April. During the orientation, you will receive recertification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS), certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), attend training in patient communication and be orientated to ward-work through job shadowing. Read more about our Orientation in April 2005 and April 2006.
We have also specially designed a HO Orientation and Procedures e-Learning Module on the SingHealth Intranet. This is an in-house e-learning syllabus that provides instant revision at your own time for basic but important HO procedures such as:
- Bladder Catheterization
- IV Cannulation
- Nasogastric Tube Insertion
- Venepuncture.
You will be provided instructions, userID and passwords to access SingHealth Intranet during your orientation brief.
