OVERVIEW

The Department of Urology has a total medical staff strength. The Urology Centre provides a whole range of comprehensive services in the management of urological problems. With a complete range of state-of-the-art facilities, the Centre performs minimally invasive procedures such as ESWL (Extracorporeal Shock-wave Lithotripsy) for treatment of urinary stones and Transrectal Ultrasound, Laparoscopy and sophisticated urodynamic facilities including video dynamics.

The Urology Centre is staffed by urologists with a board range of experience in the fields of shock-wave lithotripsy, uro-oncology, laser surgery, endo-urology, female incontinence, transplantation, microsurgery and urodynamics. Specialty Clinics have been organized in:

  • Female Urinary Incontinence
  • Haematuria
  • Prostate Disease
  • Urinary Stone Disease and ESWL
  • Uro-oncology
  • Erectile Dysfunction/Male Infertility
  • Vascular Access/Renal Transplantation
  • Reconstructive Urology

The Centre adopts a team management approach where any individual patient will be managed by more than one urologist, which ensures that our patients get the most comprehensive and appropriate care.

TEACHING AND TRAINING

The Department provides basic and advanced specialty training. In addition the Department also trains medical undergraduates and nurses.

ADVANCED SPECIALTY TRAINING PROGRAMME

The 4-year program involves a year as a MOS or Registrar in a general surgical unit. (Or a minimum of 6 months in General Surgery and 6 months in other relevant surgical units, prior approval from the Specialist Training Committee is required). 3 years of Urology in accredited urology units, 2 of which may be done in other accredited units, local or overseas.

RESEARCH

For the year 2001, publications from the department amount to more than 19 papers in peer review journals. More importantly, more than 70 per cent of the publications were in international journals. Apart from clinical research, the department had also been active in basic laboratory studies. This was reflected by the amount of S$400,000 in total from successful application to the SingHealth Cluster Research Funds.
