The Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine
provides one of the most comprehensive services in Pulmonary
and Critical Care Medicine in the region. Its strengths
include Critical Care, Lung Cancer, Interventional Bronchology
(both flexible and rigid), Pulmonary Function including
Exercise Testing, Sleep Disorders, and End Stage Lung
Disease. The department's work is in close tandem with
Thoracic Radiology, Thoracic Surgery, Medical Oncology
and Therapeutic Radiology.
Teaching remains the highlight of the department activities.
The department is active in advanced specialty training
and training medical undergraduates, postgraduates,
nurses and physiotherapists. The department also organizes
updates and courses for general practitioners. The department
is accredited for training by the Specialist Accreditation
Board.
The heavy clinical workload of the department provides
excellent material for research. Most of the department’s
research activities consist of clinical research in
the areas of lung cancer, bronchology, asthma, non-invasive
ventilation, critical care outcome, obstructive sleep
apnea and malignant pleural effusions.
Clinical trials to test new drugs are currently in
Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (COPD), Community Acquired
Pneumonia, Acute Exacerbation of COPD and Allergic Asthma.
