| The Department of Plastic Surgery includes
the Burns Centre in SGH.
As the National Training Centre for Plastic Surgery
and Burns, it offers a comprehensive range of Plastic
Surgery and Burns services with research and training
as an integral component of the departmental activities.
The clinical workload in the department in 2001 was
broad-based. Of 14,000 outpatients, 6,200 cases were
new referrals. There were over 1,617 admissions of which
309 were to the Burns Centre. The total number of operations
was over 2,177 with two-thirds of these being ambulatory
cases.
The department is the only comprehensive training department
in Singapore and sub-specialization include the following:
- Congenital and Cleft Deformities
- Head and Neck and Skin Malignancies
- Microsurgery
- Craniofacial Trauma and Deformities
- Burns
- Aesthetic Surgery
- Laser Surgery
The Department is involved in undergraduate curriculum
and postgraduate teaching of basic and advanced surgical
trainees. The Department is accredited by the Specialist
Accreditation Board for advanced specialty training.
One of the strengths of the department is in its research
activities. It has established the Facial Anthropometry
and Cephalometric Evaluation Laboratory, Laser Imaging
Laboratory, Skin Culture Program and Skin Bank Program.
There are on-going cadaveric studies done in the Department
of Experimental Surgery SGH. Various NMRC and DCR grants
have been awarded annually to the department. Each advanced
trainee (Registrar) is given time to complete at least
one basic research project during the period of training.
The results are presented at a local, regional or international
meeting and published in a peer-reviewed journal.
The department has produced 4 winners of the prestigious
Young Surgeon’s Award offered by the Chapter of
Surgeons, Academy of Medicine, Singapore. In addition,
one of the department’s trainees have also won
an international award for the best research paper read
at the Seventh International Congress on Cleft Palate
and Related Craniofacial Anomalies. Currently, there
are 12 on-going research projects in the department.
