Surgery is responsible for the general spectrum of orthopaedic
service, as well as their individual clinical sub-specialties,
namely, musculoskeletal oncology service, spinal surgery,
sports medicine and rehabilitation, degenerative joint
disease/arthritis clinic, paediatric, traumatology and
adult reconstruction.
The department has special services such as Trauma
Service to deal with patients with polytrauma and revised
joint replacement program to reduce long term complications
of total joint replacement. The Musculoskeletal Service
of the Department is enhanced with the joint collaboration
of the Department of Medical Oncology and Pathology
to provide specialized care of patients with musculoskeletal
tumors. Patients undergoing arthroscopies are now treated
under outpatient service in the Ambulatory Surgery Centre.
The Department also works closely with the AO Centre,
Singapore, in the fields of traumatology and rehabilitation.
Besides training medical undergraduates, nurses and
paramedical personnel, the Department is also active
in organizing workshops and seminars for local and overseas
surgeons. The department is accredited for Advanced
specialty training in Orthopaedic Surgery by the Specialist
Accreditation Board.
Research is an integral component of the departmental
activities. The Department collaborates with the National
University of Singapore and National Technological University,
Singapore, to conduct on-going studies on the femur,
