The Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology provides
both the general specialist clinical service, as well
as sub-specialties in fetal maternal medicine, gynaecological
oncology, reproductive endocrinology, assisted reproduction,
urogynaecology, endoscopic and minimally invasive surgery,
reproductive reconstructive microsurgery, screening
and health enhancement programs and women’s psychological
health.
Our team in reproductive medicine achieved the first
successful live births in Singapore from ovum donation
and surgical retrieval of sperm and cryo-preserved embryo.
They have also consistently achieved live birth pregnancy
rates of above 20% per initiated in-vitro fertilization
(IVF) cycle and above 30 per cent with intra-cytoplasmic
sperm injection (ICSI). The department manages the andrological
laboratories for the hospital as well as the sperm and
embryo banks. The subspecialty laboratory provides cytogenetics
for embryo and gametes, reproductive endocrine protein
biochemistry and molecular biology techniques.
The staff shares a wide range of experience and expertise
in advanced laparoscopic and endoscopic procedures (minimally
invasive surgery). The department recorded the first
tubal patency using falloposcopic tuboplasty in Singapore
and the region. Laparoscopic surgeries are also performed
for colpo-suspension for genuine stress incontinence,
hysterectomy, ectopic pregnancy, ovarian cystectomy
and pelvic lymphadenectomy.
There are facilities of advanced pelvic imaging and
fetal imaging by color Doppler ultrasound in the department.
The Fetal Growth Clinic utilizes fetal and uterine blood
flow for monitoring and assessment of fetal growth and
well being. Many advanced ultrasound-directed procedures
are available in outpatient treatment.
The gynaecological oncology section has evolved to
provide total care for women with genital cancers. This
includes the whole range of conservative and radical
surgeries, laparoscopic cancer surgeries, chemotherapy
and palliative care. There are specialized cancer screening
programs using tumor markers, colposcopy and color Doppler
ultrasound screening.
The department provides basic and advanced specialty
traineeship in obstetrics & gynaecology, and clinical
training for medical undergraduates and nurses. The
department also runs an active educational program for
practising clinicians and the public.
The Ultrasound program was accredited by the Royal
College of Radiologists/ Royal College of Obstetricians
and Gynaecologists in February 1993. The advanced specialty
program is recognized for specialist accreditation by
the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists
and the Royal Australian College of Obstetricians and
Gynaecologists. The Department is recognized by the
Specialist Accreditation Board.
Research activities are an integral component of the
departmental activities. Ongoing studies include the
effect of high cadmium pollution on male fertility,
falloposcopic assessment and tuboplasty, ovarian cancer
screening, oncogene studies, immuno-gene therapy for
gynaecological cancers, molecular genetic pathogenesis
of endometriosis, innovative detection methods for cervical
cancer and numerous clinical therapeutic trials.
