The SGH Department of Internal Medicine has comprehensive
experience in general internal medicine. In addition,
all senior medical staff in the Department are accredited
specialists in various fields of internal medicine.
These include Rheumatology, Gastroenterology, Respiratory
Medicine and Neurology.
An important component of the department is the infectious
disease service that provides consultations in various
aspects of community and hospital-acquired infections.
The department also provides the hospital with a Gastrointestinal
Motility Clinic, as well as inpatient and outpatient
Rheumatology services.
Daily consultations in all aspects of general internal
medicine are also provided to the hospital.
Basic trainees will spend 6 months in the department.
During this time, the trainee will participate in the
inpatient, outpatient, teaching and research activities
of the Department. The trainee will learn to manage
a wide variety of conditions in general internal medicine
like congestive heart failure, pyrexia of unknown origin
and drug poisoning. The candidate will also be attached
to the infectious diseases unit of the Department for
a month. In addition, the trainee will also engage in
the teaching activities organized by the Division of
Medicine.
This program is based on a holistic instead of an ‘organ-based’
approach to internal medicine. Advanced specialty training
is expected to provide medical staff with a high level
of skill in assessing and managing patients as a whole
individual. It is anticipated that doctors who have
completed an advanced training program in general internal
medicine will be able to manage most patients competently
and will only need to refer patients when specialist
facilities are required or when input is needed for
less common conditions.
The department also provides advanced training in general
infectious diseases. The department is recognized for
training by the Specialist Accreditation Board.
