| The Department of General Surgery provides,
in addition to the wide spectrum of services for surgery
in general, a range of clinical sub-specialties. The
strengths of the Department of General Surgery lies
in the five sub-specialized areas:
- Vascular Surgery
- Breast and Trauma Surgery
- Head and Neck Surgery (with multidisciplinary participation
by the Departments of Dental Surgery, Otolaryngology
Neurosurgery, Plastic Surgery and Radiotherapy)
- Upper GI, Laparoscopic Surgery and Therapeutic
Endoscopy
- H epatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery
The Basic Surgical Trainee program is structured closely
to the department’s weekly activities. This consists
of weekly radiologic, oncologic and morbidity/mortality
conferences. The department is divided into 5 teams
with each its own specialty.
Basic trainees participate in elective operating theatres
at least twice a week. On the average, each trainee
has the opportunity to be oncall for acute general surgical
conditions for about 5 to 6 times per month. In addition,
each trainee is assigned a consultant who acts as a
supervisor within the six months. The supervisor oversees
the adequacy of hands-on clinical and operative experience
besides conducting interim program reviews to ensure
that the general surgical exposure is relevant to the
trainee’s declared training program. There are
teaching sessions for surgery in general pitched at
the level of the MRCS examinations. In addition, the
specialty-specific tutorials weighted towards acute
care in vascular, breast, head and neck, upper gastrointestinal,
hepatobiliary and thoracic surgery ensure a more complete
exposure. Consultant within the department or invited
consultants conduct fortnightly trauma mini-lectures.
All trainees are given partial sponsorship workshops
during the 6 months.
Training/Viva for advanced surgical trainees (3 months
before exit exams), annual vascular anastomotic workshop,
and in-house courses like advanced laparoscopic program
(suturing and knot tying), advanced stapling course
and anastomotic workshop are among the postgraduate
training organized by the Department.
The department is recognized for basic and advanced
specialist training by the Specialist Accreditation
Board.
The department is actively involved in a wide range
of clinical and basic research. Prospective clinical
trials and retrospective studies are ongoing in the
department and are particularly focussed on cancer care
and management. Surgical Oncology and Surgical and Vascular
Physiology are some of the main areas of focus of research.
With laboratory-based research, the department has expertise
to perform molecular biology research, immuno-histochemical
techniques and has a strong forte in work involving
animal models for cancer research, transplantation and
new operative techniques.
