The Department of Endocrinology is responsible for
both the general spectrum of services, as well as their
individual clinical specialties namely, diabetes, thyroid
disorders, pituitary disorders (pre and post-neurosurgery),
short stature, delayed pubertal development, endocrine
obesity, endocrine hypertension and other hormonal disorders.
The Diabetes Centre established in 1996 currently treats
about 1600 outpatients monthly. The Centre has the capability
to diagnose and treat various aspects of diabetes under
one roof. Facilities for managing diabetes-related impotence
are available. A joint clinic for gestational diabetes
is held once a week. Diabetic foot problems are dealt
with by the podiatrist in consultation with the medical
staff.
A clinic is also set up for the management of difficult
metabolic and lipid problems. The department is currently
in the process of establishing itself as the lipid reference
centre for the region with the commissioning of equipment
enabling the sub-fractionation of lipids by density
ltra-centrifugation.
In 1997, the thyroid unit was set up to look after
all forms of thyroid disease including thyroid cancer
and its complications.
Advanced specialty training in endocrinology is provided
at the department. At any one time, the department can
train 4 advanced trainees as stipulated by the Specialist
Training Committee. 5 basic trainees can also be accepted.
The teaching activities include case presentations,
mortality analysis and lectures. The department is active
in providing basic training in internal medicine too.
The department also contributes to the training of medical
undergraduates, nurses, primary health doctors and other
health professionals. Periodic seminars and workshops
targeted at primary health doctors are conducted.
The department is recognized for training by the Specialist
Accreditation Board.
On-going research on lipidology, diabetes, Graves’
disease and obesity are currently being conducted.
