The department provides anaesthesia for all types of
surgery (with the exception of liver transplant) and
invasive procedures in the hospital. In addition, it
manages a 10-bedded intensive care unit for surgical
patient and provides an in-house acute resuscitation
service for trauma patients and surgical inpatients.
It also provides an obstetric epidural service and
manages both acute and chronic pain for both inpatients
and outpatients. The department has implemented the
APACHE II scoring system, a critical anaesthetic incident
monitoring system for audit and has recently started
a computerized data collection on a trial basis. It
also made medical history in Singapore as part of a
multi-disciplinary team which successfully separated
a pair of craniopagus conjoined twins in a marathon
surgery which lasted more than 90 hours.
The department provides training for basic trainee
and advanced specialty trainees in Anaesthesia.
The department is actively involved teaching programs
for medical students, postgraduate medical students,
nurses and midwives. The Department also undertakes
many in-house training activities, lectures, tutorials,
mock vivas, mock written test and workshops. It has
an in-house continuing medical education with journal
clubs, case presentations, mortality/morbidity meetings
and symposia.
The department is accredited by the Singapore Specialist
Accreditation Board and the Royal Australia and New
Zealand College of Anaesthetists for postgraduate training.
