| The current neonatal
department dates back to 1990 when it started as two
parallel neonatal units in the old KKH. With the move
into the new KK in 1997, the departments amalgamated
as one. The number of annual deliveries in KKH ranks
amongst the highest of any hospital in the world and
the department serves approximately 16,000 newborns
per year with many in the high-risk obstetric group.
The department offers comprehensive training in Neonatology
from perinatal care, neonatal intensive and special
care and neuro-developmental follow up of premature
babies.
The department has 24 neonatal intensive care, 60 special
care beds and a wide range of specialist outpatient
clinics. There is a strong liaison with high-risk obstetrics
with a well-developed Birth Defect Clinic and High-Risk
pregnancy consult service.
The department's perinatal mortality, neonatal mortality
and morbidity rates are comparable to developed countries.
We are one of the few Asian centers with the Vermont
Oxford Network for international benchmarking. Further,
there is strong support from in-house paediatric medical
and surgical sub-specialties.
The department has participated in many multi-centered
randomized controlled trials in both perinatal and neonatal
areas of research.
We have well-equipped conference and teaching areas
and IT support for teaching and training. There is also
a neonatal library with full range of reference materials
available. Each trainee is assigned a supervisor who
will meet with him / her regularly to assess learning
and training. Training is approached with various techniques
to ensure quality and an atmosphere of learning.

Basic trainees (Paediatrics) are trained to ensure
skills and knowledge required for paediatric specialization.
Advanced trainees undergo general and sub-specialized
training to gain further experience and confidence in
Neonatology.
Training will comprise lectures, conferences, didactic
teaching, bedside clinical tutorials and on-the-job
training. The following are some training activities
in the departments:
- X-ray Sessions
- MO Lectures
- Slide Sessions
- Research Meetings
- Antibiotic Rounds
- In-Service Lectures
- Social Case Discussions
- Morning Reports
- Mortality Round / Quality Assurance Meetings
- Chronic Case Review
- Perinatal Mortality Rounds
- Journal Clubs
- Orientation course in basic neonatal skills
- Neonatal Resuscitation
- Advanced Resuscitation in Children
- Bedside Cranial Ultrasonography (with accreditation
by Dept of Diagnostic Imaging)
- Prevention of Medication Error Workshop
Clinical experience plays a vital role in our training.
The trainee is required to perform the clinical activities
of standby for resuscitation at delivery, routine ward
work, night duties and outpatient clinics. Presentations,
journal reading and literature search are also expected.
Basic trainees are encouraged to do at least one clinical
paper. Advanced trainees are expected to complete and
publish a paper as the first author.
