KKH oversees the delivery of an average of 16,000 babies a year. A significant proportion are pre-term and complicated pregnancies. The department is the specialist referral centre for paediatric emergencies and other all other clinical specialties. In 2001, the department performed 90,000 radiological examinations for both the women and children’s population.
The imaging modalities available in the department are :
- Radiography
- Digital fluoroscopy
- Ultrasound
- Spiral CT
- Mammography
- Nuclear Medicine
- Angiography
- Bone densitometry
- Interventional procedures
After office-hours, urgent imaging procedures are handled by the women’s and/or paediatric radiologist on-call. Monthly training rotations for Paediatric Radiology Fellows include:
- Introduction to various modalities (Paediatric & Women’s imaging) & sedation protocols
- Plain film reporting including NICU X-ray Rounds
- Fluoroscopy
- Paediatric Sonography including NICU Portable studies
- CT
- Nuclear Medicine and MRI
- Women’s Imaging (Sonography, Mammography & HSGs) – optional
- 1-2 mth rotations (4-5 months in total) in specific modality interests which may also include approved research projects
The department is fully equipped with up-to-date facilities and is in the process of evaluating PACS with compatible HIS/RIS products. The department offers plain radiography (and ‘wet reporting’), fluoroscopy, ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), mammography, nuclear medicine, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), interventional and vascular procedures.
All radiographs, Ultrasounds, CTs and nuclear medicine studies are computed but presently laser-printed for reporting. The department shares MRI facilities with the National Neuroscience Institute and Tan Tock Seng Hospital.
Fellows will be trained to present and discuss cases during the following meetings:
- Neonatology (fortnightly)
- Paediatric Medicine (fortnightly)
- Paediatric Surgery (fortnightly)
- Paediatric Oncology (monthly)
- Paediatric Neuroimaging (monthly)
- Interesting Case Rounds (weekly) & Dept CT Rounds (twice weekly)
Fellows will also be expected to teach medical officers and trainees in the hospital as well as to be involved in training and education program for KKH staff. They will take supervised 1st-line radiologist calls after office hours.
