INTRODUCTION

The Department of Urology began in the early 1990s in the former Toa Payoh Hospital. Subsequently relocated to Changi General Hospital, it has grown in strength and reputation.

Today, the department operates a state-of-the-art clinical and research unit. The clinical team provides complete spectrum of general urology and sub-specialties such as endourology, uro-oncology, andrology, female urology, reconstructive and laparoscopic surgery. Recent years have seen a significant increase in outpatient urological procedures, such as extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy, urodynamics, ultrasound, prostate biopsy, cystoscopy and minor surgical procedures. The department provides a one-stop service for evaluation and treatment of urological problems.

The department is currently involved in various clinical research projects. It is well established as a centre for multi-centered clinical trials as well as a prototype development site for extra-corporeal lithotriptors.

TRAINING PROGRAM

The department provides training for medical students, nurses, basic and advanced surgical trainees.

Basic principles of urology are taught to medical students in their third and final years. Formal lectures and bedside tutorials are used during these teaching sessions.

The department is accredited by the Academy of Medicine, Singapore for basic and advanced surgical training. Basic surgical trainees who undergo a 6-month rotation in the department are exposed to a wide spectrum of urological cases. They are taught minor urological operations and supervised in more complicated procedures.

ADVANCED SURGICAL TRAINING PROGRAM

The Advanced Surgical Training Program is a comprehensive 4-year program encompassing one year training in a General Surgical Department and three years in the department of urology. It is designed to provide trainees with clinical exposure to acquire advanced knowledge and competence in urology.
