The Rehabilitation Medicine Service was set up in 1997. As a specialty, Rehabilitation Medicine was first established over 50 years ago in the United States to care for a wide spectrum of patients who have physical impairment due to various reasons such as cerebral vascular accident, multiple trauma, spinal injury and head injury.
The specialty has existed in Singapore since 1973. Rehabilitation Medicine has the holistic goal of developing a person to the fullest physical, psychological, social, vocational, and educational potential consistent with his on her physiological or anatomic impairment and environmental limitations. It does not treat a system, but treat the person as a whole to maximize functional independence and reintegrate the person back to society after a major illness.
The service actively manages the rehabilitation of patients after cerebral vascular accident, spinal injury, head injury, multiple trauma, fractures and deconditioning from prolonged bed rest. The service is also runs outpatient clinics for patients requiring spasticity treatment and Electro-diagnosis.
The service is also actively involved in the teaching and training of medical officers. Research is strongly encouraged.
The service is fully accredited by Singapore’s specialist training committee for three-year advanced specialty training in Rehabilitation Medicine.
Through clinical exposure, reading and didactics, the three-year program is designed to train advance trainees for knowledge and competence in management of patients with functional limitations requiring rehabilitation.
Advanced trainees have the option of consolidating their third year training at renowned rehabilitation centers overseas. Trainees will also have a chance to be exposed to rehabilitation in Tan Tock Seng Hospital's Rehabilitation Department.
