OVERVIEW

The Division of Psychological Medicine provides a comprehensive inpatient and outpatient psychiatric service. The division also provides a consultation service to the medical and surgical disciplines in the hospital. It works closely with the family physicians, family service centers and nursing homes in the vicinity of CGH.

The division has a special interest in the following areas:

  • Anxiety disorders
  • Mood disorders
  • Somatoform disorders
  • Trauma-related disorders
  • Stress management.

In addition to general psychiatry the division provides training in the areas of geriatric psychiatry and liaison psychiatry.

The division has staff of four psychiatrists, one registrar, two medical officers, a clinical psychologist and two visiting consultants.

TEACHING ACTIVITIES

The division is involved in the teaching of medical students and provides both basic and advanced specialty training in psychiatry. It organizes continuing medical education programs such as psychiatric case conferences, journal clubs, seminars and workshops. Grand ward rounds and tutorial sessions are held weekly. The division also organizes programs for family physicians, nurses and paramedical staff.

RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

The research activities currently focus on stress, suicide and attempted suicide, geriatric psychiatry and liaison psychiatry.

TRAINING PROGRAMME IN PSYCHIATRY

The goals of our training program are:

  • To provide a comprehensive and up-to-date didactic curriculum in the medical, biological, psychological, ethical and socio-cultural aspects of psychiatry.
  • To provide training in general psychiatry and the psychiatric subspecialties of geriatric psychiatry and liaison psychiatry.
  • To maintain a spirit of scientific inquiry and empirical evaluation through active research programs.
  • To monitor the trainee’s progress so that upon completion of their posting they will be competent enough to treat psychiatric disorders. There will be opportunities for the trainee to see a broad range of psychiatric disorders as they present in a general hospital setting. These include delirium, somatoform disorders and other causes of medically unexplained symptoms, medical and surgical conditions and treatments associated with psychiatric disorder.

BASIC SPECIALITY TRAINING IN PSYCHIATRY

The trainee will acquire basic clinical skills and knowledge in the treatment and management of patients in general psychiatry as well as in the sub-specialty of geriatric and liaison psychiatry.

During this period of training, the trainee will participate in inpatient, outpatient, teaching and research activities. These activities include a weekly Grand Ward Round and Journal Club, lectures and tutorials by the senior staff and an opportunity to provide consultation under supervision.

ADVANCED SPECIALITY TRAINING PROGRAMME

ACCREDITATION
The Division of Psychological Medicine is accredited for 2 years of advanced specialty training.

CONTENT
The training program is designed to provide the trainee with clinical experience and to acquire advanced knowledge in the treatment and management of psychiatric disorders especially in liaison psychiatry and geriatric psychiatry.

The objective of this training program is to ensure that the advanced trainee learns how to diagnose and manage the wide range of psychiatric disorders seen in the general hospital setting and in geriatric psychiatry. The advanced trainee is expected to participate actively in the management of these disorders using the appropriate interventions, which include both medication and psychotherapy.
