The department began as an orthopaedic
service in the department of surgery at Toa Payoh Hospital
in the 1960's. Then, the service consisted of just a
consultant and a registrar. With the move to its present
location in Changi General Hospital, it has grown significantly
with the introduction of orthopaedic sub-specialties
including traumatology, adult reconstruction, spine,
upper limb, ankle & foot and sports services.
The sports service also provides orthopaedic consultation
for Soldier Performance Centre of the Singapore Armed
Forces and various professional soccer clubs in the
S-League.
The department involved in continued medical education
for family medicine practitioners and polyclinic doctors.
In addition, the department organizes an annual symposium
for the public to highlight common orthopaedic problems.
The department has collaborated with the department
of experimental medicine at SGH on many research projects
and instructional courses. The sports service is currently
researching stem cell cultivation for cartilage regeneration
and allograft transplant for menisceal injuries. The
department has plans to offer fellowship posts in the
sports, upper limb and spine services in the near future.
The department has a comprehensive teaching program
for advanced trainees and residents. The program comprises
of weekly topical presentations and journal reviews.
Advanced trainees are assigned to consultants and are
supervised in their training in orthopaedic surgical
procedures.
Trauma and pre-operative rounds are conducted thrice
weekly for audit and teaching purposes.
The department is accredited by the Academy of Medicine
for advanced specialty training.
The three-year program is designed to provide trainees
with clinical exposure to, advanced knowledge and competence
in orthopaedic surgery.
