| The Division of Gastroenterology has a total
of 6 medical staff. There is a total of three full-time,
one part-time and one visiting trained Gastroenterologists.
There are three registrars-in-training, ten medical
officers, 12 house officers, four clinical research
coordinators and a basic research scientist
The division provides general medicine services and
specialized Gastroenterology consults. The division
performs more than 4000 endoscopic procedures per year,
include the following:
- Esophagogastroduodenoscopy
- Enteroscopy
- ERCP
- Colonoscopy
- Endoscopic Ultrasound
- 24-hours Esophageal pH and Manometry
The division runs an active GI hemorrhage Service offering:
- Variceal Ligation
- Histoacryl Injection
- Sclerotherapy
- Hemoclips
Other Therapeutic Procedures include:
- Laser treatment for obstructive or bleeding tumors
- Laser and dilatation of obstructive lesions
- Stent placement in the GI lumen or biliary tree,
- Therapeutic ERCP with papillotomy & stone extractions
- Polypectomy for polyps (Upper GI tract & Colon)
- Percutaneous endoscopic feeding gastrostomy
The division participates actively in management of
patients with liver disease and manages liver transplant
patients peri-operatively.
The division is actively involved in both clinical
trials and basic laboratory research. It is currently
involved in four different treatment trials for chronic
hepatitis B and two trials for dyspepsia. Laboratory
research on the molecular aspect of H. pylori and associated
different disease presentations is ongoing, with another
project studying the molecular aspect of Hepatitis B
virus and its clinical presentation. A team of four
clinical research coordinators and a laboratory scientist
support these research activities.
The division is actively involved in teaching and training
of undergraduate medical students, basic medical and
advance specialty training in Gastroenterology.
The division is fully accredited by the Specialist
Training Committee (Singapore) and the Academy of Medicine
for advanced specialty training in Gastroenterology.
The 3-year program is designed to train advance trainees
in Gastroenterology to acquire knowledge and competence
in management of gastroenterological cases through clinical
exposure and lectures. Trainees will be assigned a supervisor
who will be directly responsible for the progress of
the trainee.
