SPECIALIST APPOINTMENT SCHEMES

SPECIALIST ACCREDITATION AND REGISTRATION

The Singapore Medical Registration Act 1997 (Cap 174) requires medical practitioners to be registered on the Register of Specialists before they can be designated as “Specialists” and use the respective specialist titles.

Your specialist appointment is subject to your successful registration with the Singapore Medical Council on the Register of Specialists. The Certificate of Specialist Accreditation must be obtained from the Specialists Accreditation Board in Singapore prior to submitting the application for specialist registration.
You must pay the application fee and specialist registration fee imposed by the Singapore Medical Council . A copy of your Certificate of Specialist Accreditation and Certificate of Specialist Registration should be submitted to SingHealth to form part of your personal records with us.

Specialists may be admitted into the following appointments in SingHealth.

Senior Consultant

Senior Consultants are senior specialists who are well regarded and respected by peers for their expert knowledge and skills in the relevant specialty or subspecialty. The grade of senior consultant is usually awarded to institutional-based consultants who have attained international or regional recognition for their contributions in their respective specialty.

You must have at least 15 years of post house officer experience of which 5 years are in the consultant grade for promotion to the senior consultant appointment. Senior Consultants are normally emplaced on tenure employment.

Consultant

Consultants are specialists who have 10 years of post house officer experience with at least 2 years of post specialist registration experience. Upon appointment or promotion to the Consultant grade, you will be offered a renewable term contract for 3 years in the first instance. Thereafter, you may be offered tenure employment.

Associate Consultant

Associate Consultants are specialists who are exit-certified by the Specialist Accreditation Board and registered on the Singapore Medical Council’s Register of Specialists. They are employed on 2 to 3-year renewable contracts.
