Singapore is full of cultural and gastronomic "rojak". "Rojak" is the name of a popular local salad prepared with a variety of fruit, vegetables and fried flour pastry tossed in a peanut and prawn paste sauce.
So too is Singapore a diverse mix of migrant ethnicity and culture, languages and religions. It is no wonder that you will find a large variety of foods in Singapore. You will commonly find all that variety under one roof in one of the many hawker centers.
Authentic fine dining cuisine whether Italian, Japanese, French or Thai is also plentiful in Singapore. But is there a "Singapore food"? The jury is out on this and many locals claim that there is no such thing since we really just offer a "rojak" of tastes and cuisine. Others claim that our brand of Hainanese chicken rice, char kway teow or hokkien mee is uniquely Singaporean.
Singaporeans love their food. Live here long enough and you will hear the local break into occasional Singlish, "let's go makan", which means, "let's go eat".
