BEST HOUSE OFFICERS IN SINGHEALTH

Medical Manpower on behalf of SingHealth congratulates two of our medical officers for completing their house officer training requirements and receiving the Associate Dean's Office Commendation Award for Best House Officer. We bring you a short interview of our award winners, Dr Siow Tian Rui and Dr Gavin Tan Siew Wei.

MM: Congratulations for winning the Associate Dean's Office Commendation Award for Best House Officer. What's your secret?

STR: Thank you. Be responsible and conscientious about everything you do. Take pride in whatever you do, no matter how small it seems. Believe it or not, people will notice.
GT: Thanks. I don't think there is any secret to success. It's just a matter of hard work, knowing your place and mostly importantly putting the patient first. A tip for newbies - develop as efficient a workflow as possible especially if you want to see the sun by the end of the day! No matter how miserable you get, remember you're making some else better and hopefully that'll make it worthwhile.

MM: Were there trying / difficult moments in your HOship? How did you overcome them?

STR: Very often, especially during night calls! Be sure to be on good terms with your seniors and nurses; do not take on everything alone… I turn to these people for help when I needed to.
GT: How about... the whole year?? No it wasn't that bad but as a HO you get everything from nasty patients and relatives, insanely demanding superiors, ridiculous hours... basically it can be Murphy's law +++. But remember to hang in there, because help is always around, and the day always comes to an end.

MM: Are there any significant people you wish to highlight or thank?

STR: No single person in particular, but I especially enjoyed working with the friendly people in GS, SGH.
GT: Everyone who gave me a good appraisal...and also those that didn't. In particular I want to thank Dr. Chong YY & Dr. Deidre (SGH Division of Medicine) who were so patient with their virgin HO; Dr. Ong WC, who is a great example of what a Registrar should be; Mr. Tan SG, the most calm and cool surgeon in the face of a bleeding AAA, and many many more names I can't remember now because I am post call…

MM: Any other comments about choosing to work in SingHealth?

STR: Nothing really…
GT: Guess me and Dr. Siow bucked the trend by choosing SingHealth. Why? I believe that SingHealth with its diversity of specialist centers and sub-specialty departments offers the MO interested in specializing an amazing amount of choice, expertise and experience to learn from.
