BASIC SPECIALIST TRAINING (BST)

The information below on Basic Specialist Training (BST) is provided by Joint-Committee of Specialist Training (JCST), updated as at September 2002. The information is subjected to changes based on JCST update to SingHealth.

1. When are the intakes in a year?
- Main intake in May of each year.
- Supplementary intake in November of the year. Conducted subject to needs and availability of training posts.
- Invitations for main Traineeship exercises are in October-November, followed by selection interviews in December-January.
- Invitations for supplementary Traineeship exercises (if applicable) are generally in June-July, followed by selection interviews in August.


2. Who is eligible for BST application ?
- MOs who are registered with Singapore Medical Council (SMC) and must be in public healthcare.
- MOs who are Hepatitis B carriers not allowed to take up traineeship in procedure-related disciplines (eg. A&E, Anaesthesiology, Internal Medicine, O&G, Ophthalmology, Paediatrics and Surgery).

3. What are the specialties that are open for application?

4. What are the selection criteria?
- Selection Panels would convene to select trainees, primarily on merit, followed by interviewing the shortlisted candidates.
- No obligation to give reasons for rejected applications.

5. What is the duration of the training?
- Duration is 3 years. Traineeship will officially cease on completion of 3 years of training regardless of whether the basic trainee has passed the relevant examination or not.
- Trainees will be assessed on a 6-monthly basis by appointed supervisors. If found unsuitable, traineeship will be terminated.
- Extension of up to 1 year may be considered by the STC in special cases, subject to availability of the training posts

6. For applicants from MINDEF, when will their training commence?
- Training will commence upon ORD.
- Officers with poor performance ratings in MINDEF are liable to have their traineeship withdrawn.


7. Will part-time BST training be considered?
- Part-time training is possible, provided the position is equivalent to at least half of a full-time position.
- Duration of training will be increased to provide the same overall training time as for full-time basic trainees.
- All part-time training must meet the same standards as for full-time training.
- Maximum period of part-time training is one year full-time equivalent.

8. What happens if my training program needs to be interrupted?
- If a training program is interrupted for more than 1 year, the JCST Secretariat may require the Trainee to undergo a further period of training, in addition to the minimum requirements of the program.


9. How do I submit my application?
- Application form is obtainable from Medical Manpower Department during the exercise.
- Application should be submitted through Medical Manpower Department by due date given.
- Late applications, incomplete application forms and applications from non-eligible officers may not be considered by JCST.


10. How much is the BST fee? Will SingHealth bear the cost?
- BST fee is S$900 for 3 years, including logbook from Division of Graduate Medical Studies, NUS.
- Upon obtaining an official receipt for this payment, it should be forwarded to Medical Manpower Department for reimbursement into payroll.
