The Fight Against Breast Cancer
Breast cancer is the new epidemic of the modern world. One in 20 women above the age of 40 will be diagnosed with breast cancer. If breast cancer can be diagnosed and treated at an early stage, women can be cured and live for many more fruitful years. Early detection is hence key to the treatment of breast cancer.
The KK Breast Centre is the first in the world to used the first FDA approved digital computerised mammography plate system combined with computer-aided detection to detect breast cancers that are at the earliest stages or may be hidden by dense tissue.
Said Prof David Stringer, Head, Department of Diagnostic Imaging: "Digital mammography enables more cancers to be detected earlier. It is significantly more accurate in detecting breast cancer in women younger than 50 years old, women with dense breasts and premenopausal and perimenopausal women."
The KK Breast Centre, officially opened by Minister of Health Mr Khaw Boon Wan on 27 October 2006, is the first and only in Singapore to house state-of-the-art breast imaging services, side by side with consultation and day treatment facilities. This enables women to have their mammography, breast ultrasonography, surgical consultations, minimally invasive biopsies and procedures all under one roof, and with quick turn around time.
