SingHealth Medicine Scholarship

SingHealth has launched a new scholarship for outstanding first-year medical students who want to serve in public healthcare. Through the scholarships, SingHealth aims to groom committed talent to be the next generation of medical leaders for the public sector in Singapore.

Boosting Medical Education

Starting with the current Academic Year 2010/2011, the SingHealth Medicine Scholarship will grant up to 4 scholarships annually to first-year students of Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School and NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. It will be awarded to students with excellent academic results, proven leadership achievements, who have a strong desire to serve the public service in healthcare, and demonstrate a passion for community service supported by commendable character references. With all other factors being equal, the financial background of applicants will also be taken into consideration.

Open to Singapore Citizens, Permanent Residents and International Students, the scholarship will pay for the scholars’ education expenses and university fees throughout the scholars’ candidature. The quantum of the scholarship will be pegged against a Singapore Citizen’s tuition fee at both universities, which is approximately $144,000 for a 4-year course at Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School and $100,000 for a 5-year course at NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. The scholarship will be given annually to the scholar throughout his/her entire course of study, subject to continued good annual academic performance.  Upon graduation, all scholars will be required to serve a four-year bond with SingHealth, which can be served concurrently with their bond commitment with the Government of Singapore.

We greatly appreciate SingHealth’s generous gesture. This further underlines the strong collaborative spirit we have on the SGH Campus, as well as SingHealth’s investment in the education of our future doctors. I wish to thank SingHealth on behalf of our faculty and students,” said Professor Ranga Krishnan, Dean, Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School.

“The NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine has been mindful that the cost of medical education, despite heavy subsidies from the government, can be a burden to medical students aspiring to be doctors.  To fulfill their dreams, the School, with the generous support of donors, has provided many students with scholarships.  The SingHealth Medicine Scholarship is a very welcome addition to this special group of scholarships aimed at encouraging bright young medical talent to serve in public healthcare,” said Professor John Wong, Dean, NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine.

Said Professor Tan Ser Kiat, SingHealth Group Chief Executive Officer, “Our staff are the backbone of the healthcare industry. Besides developing our clinical capabilities and services, equally critical is the need to nurture a pipeline of outstanding future medical leaders who are ready and passionate to serve the public.”
