This scholarship offers high caliber ‘A’ Level Science students the chance to pursue a degree programme in Orthoptics in Australia. The successful candidate will be enrolled in the 3½-year Bachelor of Orthoptic and Ophthalmic Sciences programme at the La Trobe University, Melbourne or the 4-year Bachelor of Health Sciences/Master of Clinical Vision Sciences programme at the University of Sydney.
Upon successful completion of your studies, you will enter a challenging and rewarding career in SNEC as an Orthoptist. An Orthoptist is a healthcare professional who is involved in ocular motility assessment, diagnosis and management in both children and adults. You will work closely with our Paediatric Ophthalmologists, General Ophthalmologists and Allied Healthcare professionals to handle a wide range of challenging tasks such as:
v Assessment of vision in children
v Assessment and management of squint (strabismus)
v Diagnosis and treatment of lazy eyes
v Implementation of vision therapy
v Participation in research projects

Academic requirements
GCE ‘A’ Level, majoring in Science with good GCE ‘O’ Level and ‘A’ Level results and good CCA performance
Other requirements
Possess good co-curricular activities (CCA) record.
Proficiency in spoken and written English
Good patient-relation skills and ability to communicate well with children of different age groups
Successful applicants for the scholarship will be required to meet the minimum admission criteria of their chosen University and maintain a minimum grade average throughout the course.
Condition of Award
The award is subject to the candidate gaining admission to the programme at either the La Trobe University (February 2009 intake) or University of Sydney (March 2009 intake).
The candidate should not be currently serving any other bond.
6 years' bond to be served at SNEC upon successful completion of the programme
