Singapore, 23 March 2007 - Women today are not only influencers and opinion leaders in the community, but also key decision makers in healthcare issues for themselves, their families and at the workplace. Simply, they can be counted on to be the champions of healthcare and possibly hold the answers to tomorrow’s healthcare.
To engage women directly, SingHealth will launch a new email channel -- awomanswish@singhealth.com.sg -- at its "Fabulous from 40!" public forum for women to be held at Raffles City Convention Centre this Sunday. The email channel is for women to voice their needs, hopes and wishes for the healthcare services they would like to see being offered to them.
Women as champions of healthcare
Over a period of two years, SingHealth conducted focus group studies involving a cross-section of women from various age groups with different healthcare usage patterns, which yielded these good insights into how women approach healthcare:
- Having come a long way from playing purely traditional caregiver roles at home, women today are found to be highly involved in healthcare issues for themselves and their family members. They are the ones who will gather information and check out the healthcare options available.
- Women’s healthcare needs also evolve over the different stages of their lives. From puberty to menopausal stage, they will confront differing issues ranging from aesthetics, pregnancy, gynaecological health, osteoporosis to cancer and heart problems.
- On top of their own health, women are equally concerned and involved in the health of their family members. For example, children’s health is cited as a key concern.
Engaging women directly to better plan healthcare services
Acting on these findings, SingHealth is taking the proactive step to engage women directly through “awomanswish”. Specifically, it invites every woman in Singapore to 1) offer ideas on new healthcare services, 2) suggest how the group can better organise and deliver its services to meet their needs, and 3) propose ways through which the group can best reach out to them.
"We hope to play a part in facilitating women’s proactive approach to healthcare, for themselves, their families and their co-workers. We are confident that women, being astute and sensitive, indeed hold the answers to tomorrow’s healthcare. All they need is the right platform, which will allow them to voice their needs, hopes and wishes for better healthcare. With their active feedback, we at SingHealth will be able to better plan our services for women’s health, build upon our expertise to provide well-integrated, seamless services and cutting edge treatments, as well as drive research in key areas of women’s health," said Mrs Karen Koh, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of SingHealth and Singapore General Hospital.
